Entertainment & Activities for Kids of All Ages
One of the most intriguing new elements to the weekend calendar is the “Pirates of Colonial America” exhibit, constructed last year and then contracted by the National Marine Manufacturing Association as part of its 2010 boat show season. The exhibit is filled with replica artifacts and is designed to give visitors the look of a pirate shanty town in early 18th Century Bahamas. Visitors walk past store fronts which present information on different aspects of pirate life, sign authentic articles with Pirate Captain Edward Low and receive their first week’s pay, or decide to abandon their pirate ways and visit the Governor’s Tent to receive a pardon.
And don’t forget to make your reservations at Door County Inns & Resorts property where you will NOT have to worry
about pirates kidnapping you or your loved ones!

Following on the heels of our Door County deer encounter story, is a random gaggle of geese encounter while walking on Hwy. 42 near the Yacht Works and JJ’s LaPuerta Restaurant. I stopped to say hello and these geese (numbering about 20 or so) were completely uninterested in my presence. It is but a constant reminder that visiting or living in Door County is unlike anywhere else. Two weeks ago I stopped by the Sister Bay Boat Rental building at the Sister Bay Marina. SBBR employee Morgan Kinney interrupted our conversation to run into the street to stop traffic for a mother duck and her babies that needed to cross the street to get to Casperson’s pond behind the funeral home. It was a Kodak moment for which I was unprepared.
What is the moral to these Animal Planet-esque stories? When you come to Door County bring your camera or leave room on your smart phone for some very charming photos of encounters with nature. I am talking about animals now but really Door County nature includes stunning fields of wildflowers, rough blue waters with foamy whitecaps, and bluff top vistas of green forests. I guarantee you will find a Kodak moment that will make you smile months after your Door County vacation has ended.
Come to Door County, engage with the outdoors and stay with one of the fine proprietors of Door County Inns and Resorts. All of our properties are close to state parks, county parks and the waterfront. We hope to see you soon!

The official website of the Door County Plein Air Festival defines the festival as: Forty Artists. Six days to paint. One incredible event. The definition of the French term “plein air” is “in the open air”, and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Door County’s festival has lots of events for art lovers of all ages. The festival takes place July 19 – 24.
On Saturday, July 24 there are lots of free events going on in Fish Creek at Clark Park and at the Peninsula Art School.
Don’t miss the Door County Plein Air Festival and when you come be sure to stay at one of our very accommodating Door County Inns and Resorts properties!

There are many cases of deer sightings in Door County. Many reside in the parks and unfortunately a lot of these sightings occur when you are traveling on the road.
Just the other morning on my way to work I had a deer run out in front of my car. Naturally this was not the first time that this has happened to me, since it is so common on the Door Peninsula. What made this morning different was that following a bit behind the doe was a small fawn. It ran out soon after the mom on legs that were still wobbly. It was so adorable but it was also a reminder that even if a deer has already crossed the road in front of you, there will most likely be another one coming.
On the up side, this is the time of year when there are quite a few fawns around the county, especially in the parks. It is a great time to take the family on a bike ride or a hike in Peninsula State Park and keep your eyes peeled for those does and their fawns!
All member properties of the Door County Inns and Resorts are a short drive from parks and many other activities. We invite you to come join us, just watch for deer on the drive to the peninsula!

I must admit that I am not a golfer, even though Door County is an amazing place to enjoy this sport. There are many courses to choose from here and most of them are located in especially scenic areas. For those golfers out there, this is a great time to visit!
Now, for the rest of us the Door Peninsula still offers mini golf (also known as putt putt). This is a great way to get the whole family together (both golfers and non golfers).
Choose from:
The Red Putter – an instutution on the Door peninsula located in Ephraim
Egg Harbor Fun Park - also featuring arcade games and go-karts
Pirate’s Cove – a pirate themed course located in Sister Bay
Johnson’s Park - which not only has mini golf but also go-karts, batting cages and more. Also located in Sister Bay.
Mini golf can be a lot of fun for the whole family, so come join in the fun! When you plan your Door County golf or putt-putt vacation, contact one of the fine lodging establishments at the Door County Inns and Resorts!
One of the greatest little pleasures that many people enjoy in Door County are our Cherries, and Cherry Season is upon us!
Its a bit early, but the mild spring has everything bumped up a bit. Although we’ve had some loss because of a couple of cold snaps, there will still be plenty of fresh cherries available through the end of the month.
For information on where to pick or purchase Door County Cherries, visit www.wisconsincherries.org
And when you plan that cherry-centric trip to Door County be sure to contact one of the innkeepers of the Door County Inns and Resorts for an extra special getaway!

There are so many reasons for all of you, to be up here on the Door peninsula, with all of us, this coming Fourth of July weekend. I don’t know where to begin, but I will anyhow. For starters whether it is hot or cool, clear or rainy, Door County’s art galleries can offer you a respite from your usual vacation routine. Here are some of the gems:
EGG HARBOR

STURGEON BAY
Gallery 42 – Located in the Fairfield building at the corner of Michigan and Third Ave in Sturgeon Bay. Three blocks from the famous steel bridge.
I guarantee you will never meet anyone like Tim Nyberg who creates amazing art, makes you laugh and serves you coffee or wine while you browse his downtown Sturgeon Bay gallery. He is the author of the Duct Tape books…and so much more.
Other Sturgeon Bay area stand-outs: Popelka Trenchard Art Glass and Martinez Studio
FISH CREEK
Gloria Hardiman Gallery – Set in the rolling meadows and orchard country in the heart of the Door Peninsula on County Road F.
First you will love the outside of the building and upon entering you will fall in love with the hand-woven garments that artist Gloria Hardiman features throughout her studio. Garments include full-length coats, jackets, capes, shawls and stoles as well as scarves, throws, and pillows for the home. Each is a handwoven, one-of-a-kind original. A must-see!
Other Fish Creek area stand-outs: Edgewood Orchard Gallery and Potter’s Wheel Gallery
There are many more of course and we will cover more in the coming weeks. One more very cool new event added to the Door County calendar this summer is the first annual Door County Renaissance Fantasy Faire. Visit their website for descriptions and directions.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July and don’t forget to contact the innkeepers of the Door County Inns & Resorts for the best lodging and customer service on the Door County peninsula.

The summer season officially starts this coming weekend for all of Door County in Ephraim kicking off with Fyr Bal! This is the 46th year of the Fyr Bal celebration in Ephraim, saluting the beginning of summer and there are lots of Scandinavian activities for all ages!
Ephraim will be busy with walking tours, music, arts and crafts and food tents on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Friday is a quieter day of the festival with walking tours and a peaceful Midsummer’s Music performance at the Hardy Gallery on Anderson Dock in the evening.
Saturday is jam packed with events starting with a regatta presented by the Ephraim Yacht Club, a raffle, a cakewalk and food all day. The celebration carries on into the evening with a traditional fish boil and more music. Then at dusk the 2010 Fyr Bal Chieftan is transported by water from Peninsual State Park to the Ephraim waterfront where their identity becomes public. At 8:30 the multiple bonfires lined up along the water are lit by the chieftan, creating a breathtaking panorama. Finally at the end the day, fireworks are set off over the harbor at sunset.
Sunday the celebration will continue with more arts and crafts, music, food and a special visit from Bucky Badger. The festival then winds down in the evening with a family sing-along at the village hall.
