Door County Mid/Late Winter Update

It’s mid-February in Door County and visions of spring are dancing our in our heads. In that spirit here are a few Door County updates of events coming up in what is left of our winter and into spring for you to peruse:

Sturgeon Bay’s Third Avenue Playhouse has many events coming up in the next few months.

The Peninsula Pulse has an inspirational story by Myles Dannhausen on the relocation of a Fish Creek favorite – the Blue Horse Bistro. This is a tale of small business owners in Door County rising above some substantial  challenges to continue their dream. And it also shows how a community bands together to help their own.

Fish Creek’s Celebration of Winter and More!

Fish Creek Winter FestivalFish Creek Winter Festival celebrates its’ 25th year of bringing outdoor fun to the month of February in Door County. Back in the early days this family favorite festival was called “Fish Creek Winter Games” because of its emphasis on an array of Olympic style games featuring the awarding of medals.

Today the playing of outdoor winter games is just as important. Get a load of these selections:

GAMES INSIDE the TENT - minnow racing, sasquatch ball toss, bean bag cannon shoot, kid’s fishing pond, pie tin toss, marshmallow shoot out & wheel of fortune

GAMES OUTSIDE the TENT - toilet seat toss, snowshoe obstacle course, ice bowling, football toss, crazy golf, bike toss, hockey shot, basketball shot, wheel of meat & hunter’s darts

Now add a dash of other crazy activities including  Shoe Dancing, the Human Foosball Tournament and you get the feeling of where this is all going. Check out the complete schedule here.

Also featured this weekend is the now annual Peninsula School of Art benefit: SOUP! Project on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 11 am – 3 pm. During the event, handcrafted ceramic bowls will be for sale and those who make a purchase can partake in a bountiful hot soup-and-bread buffet. As in past years, community-created bowls are $15 each, with “premium” bowl designs created by area professional potters priced at $40. Find out more at the Peninsula Pulse right here.

And don’t miss the antics of Baby Wants Candy at the Door Community Auditorium on Saturday night at 7:30 pm. This performance is sponsored by that venerable Door County institution: the Peninsula Players. This Weekend in Door County: Entertainment to Warm Your Soul – some of it free!

I know its winter in Door County, but his weekend features a bevy of events to warm the soul of any winter visitor.

At the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek:
• Friday, January 20, 7PM Free  – Movie Night featuring SUPER 8: a film by J.J. Abrams
In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident.
• Saturday, January 21, 9AM Free – Distinguished Lecture Series: Biblical Interpretations
St. Norbert’s College Lecturer: Dr. Thomas M. Bolin, Associate Professor of Religious Studies
Dr. Bolin’s research focuses on the ancient literary and cultural contexts of the Hebrew Bible as well as ancient Israelite history, specifically wisdom literature and post-exilic texts.
• Saturday, January 21, 7PM $14 – Coffeehouse Concert in the Fireside Lounge: Katie Dahl
Known for easy humor, a golden alto voice and poignant original music, Katie has shared the stage with the likes of Julie Gold and Dar Williams. Buy Tickets

Door County teens compete for the title of the 2012 Door County Idol in this highly-anticipated annual event celebrating our amazing homegrown talent. The finalists, selected from dozens of auditioning students, will perform two songs of their choice. The winner will be selected by a panel of judges with help from the audience.

Door County This Weekend: The Packers and More!

Get roped into Kevin McKillip’s “Will Rogers: An American Original” on stage at Third Avenue Playhouse Saturday, January 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 15 at 1 p.m. Will Rogers fashioned the American stand-up comic – Jay Leno, Jon Stewart and David Letterman all emerge from his shadow. Rogers died in plane crash in 1935 at the height of his career. Rogers had a daily syndicated column that ran in 400 newspapers, a national radio show and was the number one male box office draw for three years in a row. Not bad for a humble cowboy from Oklahoma.
